What types of batteries are currently available?

A variety of different battery types exist today, some of which can be divided into subcategories. As a rule, battery types are named after the materials they are made of.

Some examples include:
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Lithium polymer batteries
  • Nickel-iron batteries
  • Sodium-nickel chloride (ZEBRA) batteries

They all differ with regard to lifespan, cost, storage density, and environmental impact.
